Opt out of "My Health Record"

I just read a compelling article arguing that the decision by the Australian government to make the My Health Record opt-out (rather than opt-in) was flawed from a security/privacy point of view:

  • the Government has promised it will be secure (‘challenge accepted’ says a whole bunch of white and black hat “hackers”)
  • the data is (will be) accessible from 40,000+ GPs offices with wildly varying security
  • a lot of security/privacy assumptions were made in the design based on people having opted in to begin with
  • the Government doesn’t have a great record of managing big IT projects

If you’re in Australia and you’re persuaded by his arguments, here is the link to opt out. You have until October 15 to opt out… after that the only way to have your data removed is to die and then wait 30 years for them to stop retaining it.
